2010-11 Coaching Staff

John Adam will be returning for his 10th season as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Lutheran High School-Parker (20th overall).  Adam has helped build the program from its infancy to one of the best in the state.  He is an intense student of the game and has a passion for coaching and impacting lives both on and off the court.

In August of 2001 he replaced Tim Hippenbecker as the school’s second head boys coach.  During his first three seasons, the program continued to grow and improve in spite of having no athletic facilities.  Attending classes in a temporary site in a strip mall, playing all road games and practicing at various gyms forced the team to learn valuable lessons of perseverance and hard work.  Things quickly turned around in year two when the team won 12 games in its first year competing in the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA).

In November of 2004, the school moved into its current facility on Newlin Gulch Boulevard and on December 14, 2004, played its first home basketball game in school history against Beth Eden, winning 41-29.  After competing for two years at the 1A classification, the school’s enrollment grew and moved the teams up to the 2A classification before the 2004-05 season.  The teams also played their first league games during that season.

The growth and improvement continued in 2005-06.  After graduating three starters and losing almost 70% of its scoring from the previous season, Adam helped guide a young Lions team to a respectable 9-11 record and a #3 seed in the district playoffs.

The 2006-07 season was a breakout year for the program.  The varsity team went 15-5 (including a 7-3 league record), tied for 2nd place in league and secured a home playoff game for the first time in school history with the #2 seed in the district playoffs.

With lofty goals in sight, the 2007-08 season saw the program take yet another step up.  The team earned itself the #1 seed heading into the district tournament and promptly earned their first district playoff win in school history.  The season ended abruptly on a last-second shot by eventual state champion Sedgwick County in the district semi-finals.  Even in the loss the Lions proved that they could compete with any team in state and set the tone for future seasons.

Momentum continued into another historical season in 2008-09.  After a tough first half of the season the team went on an 11-game winning streak, capturing the District 7 Championship, winning the Region 7 Championship and earning a berth in the State Elite Eight Tournament.

More school records were set during the 2009-10 season.  The team won their first league title with a perfect 9-0 record and all five starters were elected to all-league teams.  They again won the District 7 and Region 7 Championship which earned a second straight trip to the Elite Eight, where they won two of their three games to capture the State Consolation Championship and finish with a 22-5 record.

During his tenure, Adam has had 24 players make All-League/District teams and four All-State selections.  He was awarded the Northern Front Range League's Coach of the Year Award for the 2006-07 season and had the honor of being selected as a clinic speaker at the 2007 CHSCA Master Clinic.  He was voted the Mile High League's Coach of the Year Award for 2009-10 and was a member of the 2010 All-State Games coaching staff.  Coach Adam also had an article published in the May/June 2009 edition of Winning Hoops Magazine.

While building a competitive program from the ground up, Adam has made player development priority #1 - physically, mentally and spiritually.  Lutheran’s teams have consistently worked hard in the off-season attending camps, playing in leagues and working out at open gym sessions and the weight room.  His players and coaches strive to live and compete with Biblical principles both on the court and off.  Their foundational verse comes from Colossians 3:23 which says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men."  He has implemented weekly team studies and pre-game devotions which emphasize living out their faith through the sport of basketball.

The feeder programs have blossomed under his watch as well.  The program continues to host a grade school summer camp and sponsors teams in spring and fall JAM leagues.  The 7th grade Parker Lions teams won the NIT division in 2005 and 2009.

Adam’s coaching career began in 1991 at his grade school, St. John’s Lutheran in Denver.  After spending 5 years at St. John’s, he coached a freshman team at Denver Lutheran High School in 1996-97.  He was promoted the following year to varsity assistant and served in that capacity for four years until taking the head job at Lutheran-Parker.

A graduate of Denver Lutheran High School (1988), Adam had a very successful high school basketball career, posting a 75-11 record in his 4 years which included a State Consolation Championship in 1986-87 and a 20-3 record and #4 ranking in state his senior year.  In 1992 he graduated from Metropolitan State College with a degree in Marketing.  He currently is the State Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coaches Ministry.

He and his wife Karen have been married for 14 years and the couple has one son, Mark who is ten.  The family resides in the Southwest Denver area.

The 2010-11 season marks the second year for Aaron Carrado as Junior Varsity Coach at Lutheran.  His confidence and experience provide excellent tools to help mold young players.

“Aaron has incredible energy and passion for coaching,” says Adam.  “He has the ability to establish rapport quickly with our new players and begins teaching them right away.”

Carrado's athletic career led him to play three years of college basketball and one year of college football at Southwestern University in Texas where he majored in Biblical Studies with a minor in Exercise Science.  He also played in an arena pro football league after college.

During the day Coach Carrado does individual personal training and speed training with the House of Speed in Centennial.

He is married to Natalie and has two sons, Alex and Charles.  They live in Parker.

Daniel Cattau takes over the reigns for the C Team for the 2010-11 season.  This is his first full-season at Lutheran but he is no stranger to the program as he helped out the staff during the first semester last season as a student teacher.

"Coach Cattau brings a diverse background in training and coaching to our program," said Adam.  "He has a tremendous heart and passion for impacting athlete's lives and will be a major addition to our staff."

Cattau comes from a coaching family.  His father, Tim, is an assistant coach at Denver Lutheran HS and had the unique opportunity of  going head-to-head with his son when the two schools faced each other December 4th.

He has a well-rounded athletic career as he played football, basketball and baseball while he was at Denver Lutheran High School.  He was an Honorable Mention All-State basketball player his junior and senior season as well as All-State in football his senior year.

His bachelors degree is in Mathematics and Secondary Education.  He teaches math and is Admissions Director for Lutheran Parker.

Daniel is married to Elizabeth (2010) and live in Parker.

The newest member of the coaching staff is Jason Block who will be the Varsity Assistant Coach for the 2010-11 season.  He is no stranger to basketball as he was the Head Junior Varsity Coach at Denver Lutheran High School from 1995-2004 where he had over 100 victories.

"Coach Block is a great tactician and anticipates things well, which will be vital for our team," says Adam.  "He loves to coach and does a great job with the players."

In 1989 he graduated from Indianapolis Lutheran High School where he played soccer, basketball and baseball.  His coaching career began in 1992 as an assistant coach at Milwaukee Lutheran High School.  The following year he moved to Fort Worth, Texas where he coached middle school at St. Paul Lutheran School for two years.  He teaches math at Lutheran Parker and is also the school's Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach.

He is married to Sarah and has two boys, Aaron and Andrew.  They live in Highlands Ranch.
