Weather Information – In the event of inclement weather, I will send delayed starts or cancellation information via FACTS email and FACTS Parent Alert (text messages) before providing it to local media outlets. I will try to send this message as close to 5:45 AM as possible (thanks for being gracious around this inexact science). If you have family members or friends who help with transportation, please notify them of any late starts or cancellations as my primary objective will be getting the information to the Lutheran High School community through FACTS.
Although we watch Douglas County Schools closely, we do not follow them automatically because we do not have the same school calendar (there may be days where we are in session and they are not). Our Late Start Schedule begins at 9:10 AM (no matter what day of the week it is). The complete “Late Start” schedule is included with our Bell Schedule and can be found on our website under Current Family Information. On Office Hour days (Tuesdays & Thursdays) when the weather isn’t too bad, I do take into account that we already have a starting time that is 35 minutes later (8:15 AM).
One of the helpful resources I consult is the Douglas County School District’s school closure/delay hotline at 303.387.7669. Additionally, it’s important for me to monitor conditions throughout the area as students are traveling to Lutheran High School from Castle Rock, Aurora, Kiowa, Elizabeth, and throughout the Denver Metro Area. If there isn’t a delay or closure and you’re not comfortable with the conditions in your neck o’ the woods, you have my complete support to make the decision that is most appropriate for your family. With our students coming from all compass directions, we will make the decision that best serves the majority of our community.
With safety as our primary concern, the school will be gracious with excusing weather-related tardies if the road conditions were such that students could not be to school on time on weather-related Late Start days (under normal circumstances there is an expectation that students would take weather and traffic into consideration and allow enough time to get to school).
That being said, students should make every effort to leave early for slow and safe driving. The temptation is always to leave the same amount of time to get to school, but more is likely necessary. Our school building will be open at the regular time and we are always excited to have students arrive safely, even if that means getting to school much earlier than they would have to be at LHS. There will be staff on campus.
With a weather-related Late Start schedule, our shuttles will run at the same time they normally do (unless arrangements are announced by the shuttle driver). Keeping the same departure schedule allows “cushion” for parents to get students to the shuttle, plenty of time for the shuttle to drive to school, and the opportunity to drive with less traffic. Drivers know that safety is our main objective and they have been given the freedom to contact families individually if any changes will be made.
In most cases, practices, performances, and events will be canceled or postponed in the event of a weather-related school cancellation. Please watch your email for additional information and updates. Thank you!
