Student Schedule Changes on Thursday -
-
Students may stop by the Guidance Center when they have an opening in their schedule.
Standard Response Protocol - Lutheran High School will continue to use the common language of the Standard Response Protocol, including the actions of Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. I’ve attached a copy of the poster that will be prominently located in all classrooms on campus. Actions and directives will be reviewed with students in the initial days of the school year. I will email our community in advance of our Lockdown and Evacuation drills.
Newly Printed Schedules - Each grade level will receive newly printed schedules as they arrive at school over the next two days. Thanks for leaving plenty of time to get your schedule and be in the gym for the start of the Opening Convocation.
Fifteen Absence Limit - For many years, we've operated with a Ten Absence Limit at Lutheran High School. Our policy said that students may lose credit when ten absences were exceeded for the semester. We have changed that language to read "When students miss more than 15 days in any class per semester (excused or unexcused) the student will lose credit for that class." We believe that a firm cutoff at the higher number of 15 will prove more beneficial than the potential for ambiguity at ten. Although not common, "Exceptions to the policy for extenuating circumstances may be granted on an individual basis, such as major medical issues." To read the entire policy, please visit page 22 in our Student-Parent Handbook.
Attendance at Lutheran High School is so, so important. By being present, students have the opportunity to hear about Jesus, be around teachers and staff who care about and desire to be in positive relationships with them, and learn from educators who are passionate about their subject matter! Lutheran High School is an in-person institution. We certainly understand and recognize that students will have absences. We don't want students to have additional absences because of our policy change, but to understand that we won't be able to give credit after 15 absences. According to our Handbook, "The limit of 15 does NOT include absences due to school activities or funerals."
We will certainly be in communication with students (and families) well before a student reaches 15 absences. Our strong encouragement is to take advantage of the opportunity to be present, spend from the attendance account wisely, plan ahead while recognizing that the unexpected can happen (illness, etc.), and partner with us to ensure the most beneficial educational experience for our students.
Schedules & Locker Combinations - Students, we care about you. It is not our desire for you to be anxious about the school year, to have a class schedule that doesn’t work well for you, or to wonder if you’ll be able to work your locker combination quickly enough to get to class on time. Please don’t panic or hesitate to ask if you need help with something. You have teachers, office staff, and administrators ready to assist you and encourage you! We want you to be successful and will do what we can to make your time at Lutheran High School a blessing!
Serving Him,
David Ness
