Lutheran High School Family,

Student-Parent Handbook & Dress Code - As a family, please take time to review our Student-Parent Handbook under Current Family Information on our website. I especially encourage you to read the Dress and Appearance Code that begins on page 24 (It is also a stand alone document at Dress Code under “Other Forms”). Dress code is an item that is addressed regularly at LuHi.

A LuHi Value - Our Student-Parent Handbook states that, “Lutheran High School perceives education as a professional activity and has adopted a conservative approach to the type of clothing appropriate for school dress. Therefore, LHS minimizes the focus on fashion and moves students to a certain degree of conformity. Basically, school clothes should reflect Christian modesty, be neat and clean, and convey a school-appropriate appearance.”

We believe there is important work to be done at school and want our students to be prepared for each day in accordance with these expectations. We consider this to be life preparation! Our desire is to create an environment and culture where we can focus on what’s most important and not be distracted by any dress or appearance (inappropriate messaging, immodesty, conveying not being ready for the day, etc.) outside of the standards set forth in our handbook.

Partnership with Students and Parents - Students, please be familiar with our Dress and Appearance Code and make sure and ask (in advance) if you have any questions. Additionally, please honor our Dress and Appearance Code. We want to encourage you to be all-in at LuHi, which includes respecting the policies that are in place. Respecting policies doesn’t have to mean agreeing with all of them; it’s just not an option to willfully ignore them. We know you’re up for the challenge and want you to be successful!

We fully recognize that we have some policies in place that run counter to the latest trends. We’re okay with that and want the individual components of our Dress and Appearance Code to be in harmony with our school values. We believe we have set forth reasonable expectations with many options!

Parents, thanks for your help! We want to partner with you and so appreciate your willingness to start the dress code conversations even before your students leave for school in the morning. We are always receptive to questions!

Notable Dress and Appearance Code Changes and Clarifications for 2025-2026 - This isn’t an exhaustive list, but here are some of the changes made to the Dress and Appearance Code for this coming school year.

  • We will be placing an emphasis on shorts during the school day being professional only. Athletic, workout, lounge-style, and casual shorts are not permitted during the school day. More details below.

  • Crocs or similar footwear are not permitted during the school day. More details below.

  • LuHi-branded shorts, joggers, sweatpants, pants, etc. are not permitted during the school day. More details below.

As we seek to clarify language in our Student-Parent Handbook and offer these explanations, we acknowledge there is no shortage of options in the marketplace of clothing items that continue to blur the lines of what we consider to be acceptable for the dress code at Lutheran High School.

Athletic, workout, lounge-style, and casual shorts are not permitted. There are numerous types of shorts and we are asking students and families to strive towards professional dress (think golf, bermuda, or walking length shorts) at all times. If you are not sure what would be considered athletic, workout, lounge-style, or casual shorts, students and families are encouraged to err on the safe side and look for shorts with belt loops, no notches at the bottom hem, and no visible logos. We do not require each of those items, but believe them to be helpful guidelines when shopping for appropriate shorts to wear to school.

Crocs and similar footwear are not permitted. Crocs and this style of footwear run too close to the flip flops, slides, and slippers (and related styles) we are trying to avoid as we seek to maintain professionalism in our dress code.

Students are not permitted to wear LuHi branded (school name, logo, etc.) “bottoms” during the school day for shorts, joggers, sweatpants, or pants, even if they were issued by a school activity, created by a family, or purchased on the Sideline Store. This will help with consistency between school activities, prevent changes during the school year, and help us maintain the professionalism we are looking for in our dress code.

Questions About Dress Code - Our desire and request is that the Lutheran High School student body, with support from their families, joyfully follow the Dress and Appearance Code at Lutheran High School and honor the expectations that accompany being a member of the Lutheran High School Family. For general questions about dress code items, please contact Dean of Students, Mr. Britt Gusmus at britt.gusmus@lhsparker.org or Assistant Principal, Mr. Jonathan Schlecht at jonathan.schlecht@lhsparker.org. Please feel free to send them a clothing link with a question this summer, bring something to their office during the school year, and take advantage of their desire to partner with students and families. Your questions are welcomed! Thank you!

Serving Him,

David Ness
